New Jobs in East Tennessee! Some of 2008's Highlights

2008 was a great year for jobs in East Tennessee! Site Selection's 2008 State Business Climate survey ranked Tennessee as the second state in the country with the best business climate - and it shows. Here are some of the East Tennessee Economic Development Agency's highlights:

  • Crete Carrier is building a maintenance center for its trucking firm in the next few years. The $8.4 million project will bring 388 new jobs to the region.

  • Sanford Corporation is bringing Sharpie manufacturing to Blount County. The manufacturing site will create about 275 jobs in Maryville by the end of 2009. 

  • The main supplier of furniture to IKEA is building a plant in Dandridge, TN. The 91,000 square foot facility will "150 new jobs over a three year period."

     

  • Chattanooga is home to a new Volkswagen assembly plant. The $1 billion project will bring 2,000 new jobs to East Tennessee.
 
 
  • "Denso Manufacturing Tennessee has opened a fourth plant in Blount County, which represents an added $185 million investment....The new facility actually began operations in October 2007 and now employees more than 400 people" bringing its total East Tennessee labor force to over 3,000.
  • US Cellular added 38 new workers to its customer care center located in Knoxville bringing its total workforce to nearly 600.
 
  • Lisega, Inc.'s decision to relocate to Sevierville created 100 new jobs.
 
  • Roane County has seen a boom in industrial development, beginning in 2005 with H.T. Hackney, followed by  "Saginaw Control & Engineering, Diesel Engine Parts, Red Diamond Ceramics and Cool Energy (in 2007) with plans to add hundreds of jobs over the next five years. Other companies....including Blue Bell Creameries, Best Roofs and C.R. Barger & Sons Inc., have announced plans to add dozens of jobs and millions in capital investment during 2008."
